The Scunthorpe General Hospital A&E Department

About The Project

The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trusts funded a project at the Scunthorpe General Hospital after the A&E department chose to have Sky Inside’s medically-validated feature LED sky ceilings installed. With a strong emphasis on staff well-being in the workplace, the installation project at Scunthorpe also prioritised the atmosphere of staff rest areas.

Challenges And Objectives

The objective of the project was to create a calming environment for the patients who were admitted to the A&E section of the Scunthorpe General Hospital. High levels of stress and anxiety were also experienced by the staff during their shifts, therefore the project was initiated to reduce these feelings and create a more calming environment to work in.

The project had to be completed under time-sensitive conditions, owing to the need to minimise the disruption taking place at the hospital. The time constraints played a significant role in ensuring the team worked together to deliver the project on time and within budget.

Result

At the end of the LED sky ceiling installation project, the Scunthorpe General Hospital A&E department had a grand total of 115 set up throughout the establishment. In the staff rest areas, 15 dimmable feature LED sky ceiling units were installed, as well as 30 units installed in staff base stations. For patients, units were also installed in assessment cubicles, reducing their stress and anxiety during medical examinations. The resuscitation units within the hospital had 6 of the 9 dimmable feature LED sky ceilings installed in them too.

Overall, feelings of stress and anxiety have been significantly reduced in those who occupy the space at Scunthorpe A&E at any given time. The calming effects of Sky Inside’s technology mean staff and patients experience the department differently than before installation. The construction team and contractors involved managed to deliver the project in the designated time and stick to the allocated budget too.

Stake Holder

This project would not have been possible to complete without the excellent collaborative work of the hospital staff, the contractors, and all those involved in coordinating this very important project. A special thank you needs to go out to the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trusts for believing in the project and sharing our vision. The team at Sky Inside would also like to thank Suzanne Nicholson for her efforts in liaising with us and Scunthorpe to bring this project together.
